Meditation: How to do it right
Relax. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in and out. Still your wild thoughts. Okay… You can open your eyes now. Meditation in its simplest form is what you just did.
Meditation is any practice with the intention to achieve mental and emotional calmness. There are numerous techniques and ways to practice meditation; most common technique today is to practice meditation with yoga. To get the best out of meditation (and in fact any and everything), you’ve got to do it right. How do you do it right?
Take time out
A few minutes or a full hour, set as much time as you can for meditation. Include it in your to-do list of the day. Early mornings or evenings have been shown to be the best time. Scheduling specific time to practice meditation makes it easy to make a routine out of it.
Find a comfortable place
The location of the action is as important as the action itself. Get a dimly lit, clean, cool, comfortable and noiseless spot to practice meditation. The setting should introduce the calming and relaxing effect of meditation.
Mind your thoughts
It is almost impossible to empty your mind while awake. Thoughts will always flow. So meditation is not about ridding all thoughts from your mind, it is about controlling the thoughts. Consciously stay in the moment, pay attention to everything that is happening at the moment including your breathing and sensations around you. There is every tendency for your mind to wander, when it does gently let the thoughts go and bring your consciousness to the present.
Get help
It can be hard to start on your own. Get an instructor, join a group or download guidelines and audio instructions from the internet.
With the constant revolution and rotation of the Earth with everything in it, it is important to stop for a minute and calm your mind. Meditation brings relaxation and calm to the mind and entire body. And if you must practice meditation, you should do it right.
